Boom and bust coal 2026: Tracking the global coal plant pipeline

For the annual Boom and Bust 2026 report, I worked alongside my colleagues at Trend Asia to co-author the chapter focused entirely on Indonesia. In partnership with Global Energy Monitor, our team analysed the critical shift in Indonesia’s energy landscape, specifically examining how the metal processing boom in nickel and aluminum has driven a major surge in captive coal power capacity. Through this collaborative research, we aimed to provide a clear, data-driven look at the contradictions between local industrial growth and national climate commitments.
