Politainment in the Setya Novanto accident: A framing analysis and violations of the Indonesian Journalistic Code of Ethics in the news coverage of the Setya Novanto accident on the Tribunnews, November 16–30, 2017

Abstract
The mid-November 2017 car accident involving Setya Novanto, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), captured widespread public attention due to his status as a suspect in the electronic identity card (e-KTP) corruption case. Tribunnews.com, Indonesia’s most visited online news platform, turned the issue into a farce by applying politainment logic to its reporting. This study stems from my interest in examining closely how Tribunnews framed its politainment coverage of Setnov’s accident. Additionally, this research evaluates whether the platform’s reporting fully complied with the Indonesian Journalistic Code of Ethics, the regulatory standard established by the Press Council.
This qualitative study utilises a framing analysis approach. The research object comprises Tribunnews articles concerning Setnov’s accident published between 16 and 30 November 2017. Data was analysed using Entman framing model. This model was deemed the most appropriate as it effectively explores how Tribunnews defined the problem, diagnosed its causes, made moral judgements, and suggested remedies.
The findings indicate that Tribunnews framed the coverage of Setnov accident around two primary issues - the development of his condition and the public response. Across both issues, Tribunnews showed indications of breaching several articles of the Indonesian Journalistic Code of Ethics. These indicated breaches included unbalanced reporting, the conflation of facts and opinions, minimal verification, and a lack of respect for the subject’s privacy.
